Hugh is an actuary at the consultancy Taylor Fry, where he has worked for the past ten years. Most of his work is in data analytics, which uses data to help inform decision making. While his early background is in analytics for insurance and other corporates, in recent years he has been involved in a large amount of government work. For the past five years he has been the technical lead of the annual valuation of the New Zealand welfare system, which projects the duration and cost of long-term welfare receipt. He has also been involved in projects related to outcomes for out-of-home-care children and employment services.
Hugh is also interested in research. He also completed a PhD in statistics in 2010, with a research topic about methods for understanding datasets with large numbers of variables.
